Writing!
I’ve been doing a little assignment writing lately. When you have a full plate of billable, trying to find the time to write can be a challenge. I often find my best time for writing is first thing in the morning, while I’m drinking my morning cup of coffee. My mind is fresh with new ideas and I want to write them down.
The problem is this period often competes with my desire to catch up with email. Being on the West Coast, I usually have several emails from the earlier time zones already in my inbox by the time I sit down each morning. I open Mail and I get this overwhelming desire to start replying to emails.
With multiple deadlines approaching lately I’ve been writing in the afternoon and evenings instead, something I rarely do. I was surprised that I’ve been able to crank out over 1,000 words an hour. I’ve never been very inspired to write so late in the day, but I’ve been forcing myself to do it. I just put on my headphones and start typing.
I’ve spent so much time thinking that I need to find the right time to write, that I have to be inspired. But when I just sit down and say to myself, “I’m doing this now,” the words come at an alarming rate.
I’m realizing that the worst procrastination isn’t distracting yourself, like I previously thought. But trying to constantly find the “right” time to do something, to wait for inspiration.
